Q: What are petrochemicals, Parabens and SLS and how are they harmful to the skin?
The skin is our largest organ with a surface area of about two square meters. Our skin is not an impenetrable barrier, and many drugs are administered via the skin because it is easily absorbed into the body. Many skin care products, even the big-name ones, contain harmful petrochemicals, sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), and parabens.
Petrochemicals: Examples of petrochemicals are paraffin, mineral oil and isopropyl alcohol. Ingredients with prefixes or suffixes like propyl-, methyl-, eth-, -ene are usually petroleum-based. These compounds can cause skin irritations, allergies and reduce the skin's ability to breathe and many personal care products today contain harmful petrochemicals that can cause allergic reactions and skin and scalp irritations.
Parabens: Parabens can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste. Basically, a huge percentage of the products you buy for everyday use contain some form of paraben, so it can be difficult to find products that do not use them. There are having been studies that have indicated that parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of certain cancers. Thus, it is best to take the precautionary route and not use products containing parabens.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): SLS can cause allergies, dandruff, and skin irritation. Potentially, SLS is perhaps the most harmful ingredient in personal-care products. SLS is used in testing-labs as the standard skin irritant to compare the healing properties of other ingredients. Industrial uses of SLS include: garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Studies show its danger potential to be great, when used in personal-care products. Research has shown that SLS may cause potentially carcinogenic nitrates and dioxins to form in the bottles of shampoos and cleansers by reacting with commonly used ingredients found in many products. Large amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing.
You can be assured that Mei Mei products are absolutely 100% free of petrochemicals, SLS/SLES, parabens and other synthetic preservatives, giving Mother's the peace of mind to confidently use that have been specially formulated to clean, soothe, protect, and moisturize their baby's most delicate skin.
Q: What does cGMP stand for and what does it mean?
GMP is also sometimes referred to as "cGMP". The "c" stands for "current," reminding manufacturers that they must employ technologies and systems which are up-to-date in order to comply with the regulation. GMP refers to the Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations promulgated by the US Food and Drug Administration under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (See Chapter IV for food, and Chapter V, Subchapters A, B, C, D, and E for drugs and devices.) These regulations, which have the force of law, require that manufacturers, processors, and packagers of drugs, medical devices, some food, and blood take proactive steps to ensure that their products are safe, pure, and effective. GMP regulations require a quality approach to manufacturing, enabling companies to minimize or eliminate instances of contamination, potential mix-ups, and errors. This in turn, protects the consumer from purchasing a product which is not effective or even dangerous. Mei Mei products are manufactured at the Nature’s Care manufacturing facility. Nature's Care is fully compliant with the requirements of Australian cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) and the European and American standards. All the products are manufactured and packed under an orderly and hygienic environment.
